Passage Three

Who talks more, women or men? The seemingly contradictory evidence is reconciled by the difference between what I call public and private speaking. More men feel comfortable by doing “public speaking”, while more women feel comfortable doing “private” speaking. Another way of capturing these differences is by using the terms report-talk and rapport(和谐,和善)-talk.

For most women, the language of conversation is primarily a language of rapport: a way of establishing connections and negotiating relationships. Emphasis is placed on displaying similarities and matching experiences. From childhood, girls criticize peers who try to stand out or appear better than others. People feel their closest connections at home, or in settings where they feel at home with one or a few people they feel close to and comfortable with, in other words, during private speaking. But even the most public situations can be approached like private speaking.

For most men, talk is primarily a means to preserve independence and negotiate and maintain status in a hierarchical(等级的) social order. This is done by exhibiting knowledge and skill, and by holding center stage through verbal performance such as storytelling, joking, or imparting (给予,传授)information. From childhood, men learn to use talking as a way to get and keep attention. So they are more comfortable speaking in larger groups made up of people they know less well, in the broadest sense, “public speaking”. But even the most private situations can be approached like public speaking, more like giving a report than establishing rapport.

1. Another term for “private talking” is_______.

A). report talk (做报告式讲话) B). rapport talk(和善的谈话)
C). persuasive talk (劝说性的谈话) D). women's talk (女人间的谈话)

2. When women talk, they tend to_______.

A).criticize their friends who stand out(批评出风头的朋友)
B).make others feel at home(让别人感到舒服)
C).approach public situations like private talking(像对待私人谈话一样对待在公众场合的讲话)
D).seek close relationship with other speakers(寻求与别人的亲密关系)

3. Men talk in order to _______.

A). Make new friends(交新朋友) B). share experience(分享体验)
C). negotiate with others(与人协商) D). get attention(获得注意)

4. The purpose of this passage is to _______.

A).compare and contrast the male and female talking styles(比较和对比男女不同的说话方式)

B).analyze the male and female talk(分析男女说话)

C).inform of the gender difference(告诉读者性别的不同)

D).draw people’s attention to the difference(引起人们对此不同的注意)

5. The conclusion we can draw from this passage is that _______.

A).men talk more than women(男人比女人讲话多)
B).men and women have different conversational styles(男人和女人有不同的说话方式)
C).men like to display their knowledge and skills in their talk(男人更容易在谈话时展示自己的知识和技巧)
D).men are more independent than women(男人比女人更独立)

From childhood, men learn to use talking as a way to get and keep attention。

4.答案为A)。

Passage Four
Water problems in the future will become more intense and more complex. Our increasing population will tremendously increase urban wastes, primarily sewage. On the other hand, increasing demands for water will decrease substantially the mount of water available for diluting wastes. Rapidly expanding industries which involve more and more complex chemical processes will produce larger volumes of liquid wastes, and many of these will contain chemicals which are noxious. To feed our rapidly expanding population, agriculture will have to be intensified. This will involve ever increasing quantities of agricultural chemicals. From this, it is apparent that drastic steps must be taken immediately to develop corrective measures for the pollution problem.

There are two ways by which this pollution problem can be dwindled. The first relates to the treatment of wastes to decrease their pollution hazard. This involves the processing of solid wastes prior to disposal and the treatment of liquid wastes, or effluents, to permit the reuse of the water or minimize pollution upon final disposal.

The second approach is to develop an economic use for all or a part of the wastes. Farm manure is spread in fields as a nutrient or organic supplement. Effluents from sewage disposal plants are used in some areas both for irrigation and for the nutrients contained.

Effluents from other processing plants may also be used as a supplemental source of water. Many industries, such as meat and poultry processing plants, are currently converting former waste products into marketable byproducts. Other industries are exploring potential economic uses for their waste products.
