遗传育种学家.浙江宁波人.1939年毕业于南京大学农学院.1950年在美国加州理工学院获博士学位.中国农业科学院作物育种栽培研究所研究员.1951年起以各类作物的人工多倍体为对象研究人造新物种如何使之成为人工新物种.40年后发现,物种的演化应分为两个阶段,新种形成在前,并且是随机的、突然发生的;演化(进化或人工选育)在后,并且是渐进的,有方向性的.在八倍小黑麦这个新物种的选育过程中证实,同自然物种演化过程意向,隔离机制是必不可少的.1980年当选为中国科学院院士(学部委员).

Plant geicist and breeder. Born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. Graduated from the College of Agriculture, National Central University in 1939. Received Ph.D. in biology from California Institute of Technology, USA in 1950. Research professor, Institute of Crop Breeding and Cultivation, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

In 1951, Bao initiated a research program on finding the way by which the man-made new species by artificial chromosome doubling, such as autopolyploids of rice, rye and barley, and wheat-rye allo-octoploid (or octoploid triticale ) with various defects could be converted into man-made new crops with promising economic values. After 40 years of hard work, he has found that two phases are involved in the origin of new species: first, the abrupt appearance of new species by means of a catastrophic geic change such as chromosome doubling, and second, the evolution, a time consuming slow process of micro geic adjustment and natural ( or artificial ) selection to make the prospecies matured and well adapted. It has been proved that isolation is an essential measure in the breeding of octoploid triticale as in natural evolution.


He was elected Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980.
