Thisresearchinvestigatesgenderdifferencesinsecond-languagelearningintermsofmotivation,learningstrategies,andlearners'beliefsinanattempttoworkoutthepossiblecausesofdifferencesandseveralusefulsuggestionstoteachersandstudentsofsecond-languagelearning.
Althoughthestudyofgenderasariableinlanguagelearningisstillatanearlystage,studiesofindividuallanguagelearnerdifferencesrelatedtosex(biological)orgender(sociallyconstructed)heshownthatfemalestendtoshowgreaterintegrativemotivation,touseawiderrangeoflearningstrategies,particularlysocialstrategiesandglobal/syntheticratherthanlocal/analyticprehensionstrategies,expresoreconcernsaboutthepracticaluseofthelanguage,hemorepositiveaffecttowardslearning,arekeenertoseekoutauthenticinputandaremorewillingrisk-takers.Studiesofactualresultssuggestfemalesaretypicallysuperiortomalesinnearlyallaspectsoflanguagelearning,exceptlisteninocabulary.
